BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTE TO FIRST EDITION
As explained in the text, the short paper called "Celtic" has already
appeared in book-form (The Divine Adventure: Iona, etc.), and is now, with the
courteous consent of Messrs. Chapman and Hall, reprinted in its completed state, as the
second of the three papers collectively entitled "For the Beauty of an Idea."
The present first part of this dissertation on the Celtic destiny appeared (without
certain revisions and added matter) as a foreword to an American reprint of the
"Celtic" essay (Mr. Mosher, Portland, Maine). Of "The Sunset of Old
Tales" series, one or two are printed for the first time; others, under the same
general title, appeared in The Fortnightly Review, where, also, respectively at a
later and at an earlier date, have appeared "The Woman at the Crossways" and
(Section III.) "The Four Winds of Eirinn." "The Wayfarer" is reprinted
from Cosmopolis. Of "The Children of Water" series, "Màya" is
printed for the first time; five appeared in The Contemporary Review, and "The
Lynn of Dreams" in Mr. Mosher's reprint of By Sundown Shores (from The
Divine Adventure volume); while "Sorrow on the Wind" (as also from Section
III., "A Triad" and "Aileen") first appeared in Country Life.
In the third section ("Anima Celtica"), "The Shadowy Waters
" (under the title "The Later Work of Mr. Yeats"), and part of "The
Gaelic Heart," have appeared in The North American Review. "Seumas"
is reprinted from the American volume, By Sundown Shores, already alluded to.
"The Gael and His Heritage" appeared in The Nineteenth Century for
November, 1900. "The Ancient Beauty" formed the introduction to the American
(Mr. Mosher's) edition of my retold version of the old tale of Deirdré and the Sons of
Usna; and a portion of the earlier part of The Winged Destiny (since revised and
adapted), appeared as an introductory note on "Fatality in Tragic Drama," to Mr.
Mosher's American edition of my drama, The House ot Usna.

NOTE
BY MRS. WILLIAM SHARP
The first edition of The Winged Destiny was published in 1904 (the
second in 1905), by Messrs. Chapman and Hall. Into the present edition two
"studies" have been added: I. "The Awakening of Angus Og," from the
volume of Spiritual Tales (P. Geddes and Colleagues 1897, and David Nutt, 1904),
contributed originally to the winter number of The Evergreen (P. Geddes & Col.,
1896), a quarterly edited for one year by William Sharp. 2. "The Two Old Songs of
May," which appeared in the Academy in 1905. "The Wayfarer" was
written for Cosmopolis, June, 1898; in 1904 a revised version, prepared for The
Winged Destiny, was published separately by Mr. Mosher in 1906, and it was prefaced
with a sonnet written by Mr. Alfred Noyes. This "In Memoriam" sonnet, through
the courtesy of Mr. Noyes, will be found at the end of Vol. VII. of this authorized
edition of the writings of William Sharp under the pseudonym of "Fiona Macleod."
